AN ABSTRACT
In language teaching, concept mapping has been widely recommended and used in variety of way. The writer summarizes that concept map is a graphical representation of concepts and their interrelationships. It’s very necessary for organizing new information and integrating it with existing knowledge. The act of constructing concepts maps help language learners to recognize new relationship between concepts and refine their understanding of existing relationship.
The concepts map can give manifestations of students’ understanding, externalize thinking; provide opportunities for discussion as well as interaction. Due to advantages of concept mapping. The writer tried to apply this concept in relation to teaching speaking for the students. This research leads to describing phenomena by which certain treatment of concept maps were given to the students in teaching speaking, so. This investigation is referred to descriptive – experimental study. The focus of study is based on the questions: first, what are the effects of mapping ideas (Concepts map) of certain topic to the students’ speaking improvement? Second, is there any correlation between mapping ideas and their speaking achievement? To prove the hypothesis “there is positive correlation between mapping ideas with the students’ speaking achievement,” which was developed from the research formulation, the writer applied related statistical calculation.
Based on the investigation, he found that first, the value of the t observe is 8, 34. Thus based on the significance 5% and n = 40 the t is 2.021, the t observe ⦣ t critical; it means that the hypothesis is accepted. So, the concept mapping can develop student’s speaking ability, Second, concept mapping is an out overt way of representing meaning full relationship between concepts in the form of propositions, that is, two or more concepts labels linked by clarifying words. Third, in line with the pattern in teaching speaking, there is tactic the presenting the lesson for the purpose of improving students’ skill. The process is referred to students’ mapping ideas of certain topic. In this case, the students are exposed to develop related vocabularies in order to be able to express their mind and feeling.

Finally, the concept mapping has the potential to facilitate the communication of knowledge, both verbally and in written form, and it may make valuable contribution to broadening the scope of evaluation tools available to education.
